THE STORY OF A COOKING LOVER

The story of Don Diego Rubio, known as «El Aguamala», is an epic of love, ambition and tragedy. Originally from Castile, he was the acclaimed cook of the Catholic Monarchs, where a forbidden romance flourished with Juana, daughter of King Ferdinand II. After the sudden death of Felipe «El Hermoso», Juana’s life falls apart and Don Diego is banished aboard the galleon «La Esperanza», becoming a feared pirate.
Under the name «El Aguamala», Don Diego undertakes a ruthless search for riches to win back Juana. His cruel methods and thirst for revenge lead him to epic confrontations on the high seas, including the assassination of Captain Ferdinand Magellan. However, his crew’s betrayal leads him to a lonely end off the coast of Baja California Sur.

Wounded and abandoned, Don Diego finds redemption among the Pericúes, learning their customs and dedicating himself to cooking. His legacy lives on at «El Aguamala Cevichería», opened in 2020 in San José del Cabo, honoring his memory and his passion for life and gastronomy.
